A 58-year-old Nigerien national, Sayyadi Abubakar, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly stealing rams in Bauchi metropolis. The suspect, hailing from Tahoua Town in Maradi State, Niger Republic, was apprehended on May 19, 2026, after police intercepted two vehicles along Gubi Road in Bauchi. The vehicles, a white Hummer bus with registration number Delta WW-882 ZR and a dark ash Toyota Camry with plate number Bauchi NNG-293-AA, were reportedly used to transport the stolen livestock. Authorities believe the vehicles were used to move the rams from the crime scene to other locations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Sayyadi Abubakar allegedly conspired with Alaji Ibrahim and four other accomplices to steal the rams from an area opposite A.A. Kunya Filling Station along Murtala Mohammed Way in Bauchi. The criminal group is suspected of using forged or altered vehicle number plates from different states to avoid detection during their operations. This tactic, according to police, has been employed to carry out similar crimes across various locations in the state. The police have confirmed that the case is still under active investigation, and efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the remaining suspects who are currently at large.
The Bauchi State Police Command emphasized that all individuals involved in the crime will face prosecution once the investigation is completed. Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reiterated the command’s determination to combat criminal activities and maintain peace and security in the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely, credible information to security agencies to assist in preventing and solving crimes. The police also highlighted the importance of community cooperation in curbing the rising trend of livestock theft and other criminal activities.
Livestock theft has become a growing concern in Bauchi and other northern Nigerian states, often involving cross-border criminal networks. The arrest of Sayyadi Abubakar underscores the police’s commitment to tackling such crimes, even when suspects are foreign nationals. Authorities are now working to trace the stolen rams and determine the full extent of the syndicate’s operations. The case has drawn attention to the need for enhanced security measures along key routes and better coordination between Nigerian and Nigerien law enforcement agencies.
As investigations continue, residents are being reminded to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The police’s proactive approach in this case may serve as a deterrent to others planning similar crimes. The arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to restore public confidence in security operations within Bauchi State.
