2027 Polls: Ebonyi APGA Reps Candidate Demands Probe into Murder of Supporter

The murder of Elder Onwe Ubochi, a resident of Osege Village in Umuogudu Oshia Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has sparked widespread concern ahead of the 2027 general elections. The incident occurred after Ubochi participated in a prayer session and show of support for All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidates on Monday, August 17, 2026. Barrister Tochukwu Ogalagu, APGA’s candidate for the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, condemned the killing as “gruesome and dastardly” and called for a thorough investigation by security agencies.

Ubochi was reportedly in good health when he attended the event and took part in traditional activities. He left the venue alone to return home but was later reported missing. Family members searched for him throughout the night before his body was discovered in a stream near the road leading to his residence. Ogalagu stated that the deceased’s remains have been deposited at a mortuary and that police have been notified.

In a statement released in Abakaliki on Wednesday, Ogalagu expressed confidence that security agencies would conduct a professional investigation. He emphasized that no stone would be left unturned and that those responsible would face justice. He urged supporters and residents to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against any actions that could trigger reprisal attacks or escalate tensions.

Ogalagu alleged that the murder may be linked to political threats circulating in the constituency ahead of the 2027 elections. He claimed that the killing is a fulfillment of threats issued by “expiring political actors” who oppose opposition candidates. He called on security agencies to investigate not only the death but also reports of intimidation against residents for supporting opposition parties.

Despite these allegations, there is currently no verified evidence conclusively linking Ubochi’s death to his political activities or the endorsement event. A social media report claims that some political stakeholders in Ohaukwu warned residents against backing opposition candidates, including during an APC rally held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 135 Ezzamgbo, the LGA headquarters. However, these claims remain unverified.

Ogalagu condoled with Ubochi’s family, urging them to stay strong and seek justice through lawful means. He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and appealed to all political actors to uphold peace, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law. As political campaigns intensify across Ebonyi State, the incident underscores the need for vigilance and accountability in ensuring free and fair elections in 2027.
