Truck Crushes Man to Death on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Fatal Accident Sparks Safety Concerns

A tragic hit-and-run incident has claimed the life of a yet-to-be-identified man along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the OPIC corridor in Ogun State. The accident occurred shortly before 1 pm on Wednesday, when the young adult was attempting to cross the busy highway from the Lagos-bound carriageway toward the roadside. Witnesses reported that a speeding truck struck him, ran over his body, and fled the scene without stopping. The impact caused fatal injuries, with parts of the victim’s body scattered across the road, prompting motorists to slow down and navigate carefully around the area.

Eyewitness Nojeem described seeing the man in the middle of the highway when the truck collided with him. He expressed deep concern over the recurring deadly accidents along this stretch of the expressway, urging authorities to construct a pedestrian bridge to protect people who frequently cross the road. “This is not the first time something like this has happened,” Nojeem said. “We need safety measures — not just warnings.”

When officials arrived at the scene around 2 pm, the victim’s remains were still lying on the carriageway, disrupting traffic flow. Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency (TRACE), confirmed the incident as a hit-and-run case at the OPIC bus stop on the Lagos-bound side of the expressway. He stated that TRACE personnel, alongside members of the Amotekun Corps, were deployed to manage traffic and ensure order during the emergency response.

Akinbiyi noted that the crash had significantly affected movement along the route, with efforts underway to clear the debris and remove the body from the roadway. In an update issued around 6 pm, he confirmed that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had successfully evacuated the body and transported it to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for further medical examination. He added that normal vehicular movement had been restored along the affected section of the expressway following the cleanup.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, where pedestrian crossings remain inadequate despite frequent tragedies. Authorities continue to face pressure to improve infrastructure and enforce stricter traffic regulations to prevent future loss of life. As investigations into the hit-and-run continue, calls for urgent intervention grow louder among residents and commuters who rely on this critical transportation corridor daily.
