Troops of the Quick Reaction Force attached to 17 Brigade have recovered an abandoned vehicle following a suspected terrorist ambush on the Karaduwa–Matazu road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident occurred on 4 May 2026, when commuters were reportedly attacked along the route, prompting a swift military response. Security forces received a distress call and immediately deployed to the scene, but the suspected terrorists had already fled upon sighting the advancing troops.
The Quick Reaction Force launched a hot pursuit along the suspected escape route, but no direct engagement was recorded. Despite the lack of contact, military personnel conducted a thorough search of the area and discovered an ash-coloured Volkswagen Golf with registration number KJA 743 FP. The vehicle was reportedly en route from Kafin Soli to Matazu at the time of the incident.
The recovered vehicle has since been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Matazu, SP Ahmed Hamisu, for further investigation and necessary legal action. Authorities have confirmed that the area is now secure, and calm has been restored. Security monitoring remains active to prevent any recurrence of such attacks.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly in regions vulnerable to insurgent activities. The military’s rapid response demonstrates its commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining order in high-risk zones. The involvement of both military and police units underscores a coordinated approach to tackling terrorism and ensuring public safety.
The recovered vehicle may provide critical intelligence, including potential links to known criminal networks or terrorist cells operating in the region. Law enforcement officials are expected to conduct forensic analysis and trace the vehicle’s ownership and movements. The investigation could also reveal patterns of movement and tactics used by the attackers.
Residents in Matazu and surrounding communities have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The government continues to emphasize the importance of community cooperation in enhancing national security.
This latest development follows a series of similar incidents in the region, reinforcing the need for sustained military presence and improved surveillance. As security forces continue their operations, the focus remains on dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace. The recovery of the vehicle is a significant step in the broader effort to combat insecurity in Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
