Ogun Police Impound Six Vehicles, Demolish Shanties at Toll Gate Axis

Six vehicles have been impounded by the Ogun State Police Command in Sango-Ota for violating traffic regulations, as part of a broader operation aimed at reducing traffic gridlock in the state. The crackdown, conducted under Operation “No Traffic Gridlock,” also involved the removal of shanties and illegal structures obstructing road setbacks, which have long contributed to persistent congestion in the area. Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the developments in a statement released to newsmen in Abeokuta on Monday. The operation targeted key traffic chokepoints in Sango-Ota and the Ijebu Ode Toll Gate axis, where enforcement activities were intensified to restore smooth vehicular movement.

In Sango-Ota, coordinated night operations led by the Area Commander were launched to clear illegal structures that encroached on roadways. These structures had been a major cause of traffic bottlenecks and posed safety risks to motorists. Early morning enforcement, beginning as early as 5:00 AM, resulted in the impoundment of six vehicles found in breach of traffic laws. The removal of these obstructions has led to noticeable improvements in traffic flow, with sustained monitoring continuing to ensure compliance.

Meanwhile, at the Ijebu Ode Toll Gate axis, police conducted sustained enforcement operations to address the indiscriminate parking of heavy-duty trucks and roadside trading along the highway. These activities had previously created significant blockages and disrupted the movement of vehicles. The coordinated intervention successfully cleared truck build-ups and removed other obstructions, resulting in a marked improvement in traffic conditions. Authorities have emphasized that continuous monitoring and strict enforcement will remain in place to maintain the gains achieved.

Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining the operation until full compliance is achieved across all affected corridors. He warned that any form of illegal parking, roadside trading, or obstruction of highways would not be tolerated. Offenders, he stressed, would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The police have also urged residents and motorists to cooperate with enforcement efforts to ensure safer and more efficient road usage.

The operation reflects a growing effort by Ogun State authorities to tackle traffic challenges that have long plagued major corridors. With improved movement observed in targeted areas, the police aim to extend similar measures to other congested zones. The success of this initiative could set a precedent for broader traffic management reforms in the state.
