Kwara State firefighters successfully contained a fire outbreak at a commercial building in Tanke, Ilorin, early Wednesday morning, preventing widespread damage to property. The incident occurred at a storey building located beside Terminus Motor Park along University Road, near Tipper Garage. Firefighters responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 02:19hrs, arriving to find six shops and one kiosk engulfed in flames. Their prompt action limited the destruction to only the kiosk, while all six shops were saved.
The fire service spokesman, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the details of the incident, highlighting the professionalism and coordination displayed by the firefighting crew. He noted that the fire was caused by a power surge, a common but dangerous electrical hazard in many Nigerian homes and businesses. Adekunle emphasized that the rapid response of the team played a crucial role in minimizing losses and preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, commended the firefighters for their dedication and efficiency during the emergency. He urged the public to exercise caution with electrical installations, insisting that only qualified professionals should handle wiring and electrical systems. Muhammed also advised residents and business owners to switch off electrical appliances when not in use to reduce the risk of fire.
In addition, the fire director recommended the installation of surge protection devices in homes and commercial buildings. These devices help prevent damage from sudden voltage spikes, which are frequent during power fluctuations and can trigger fires. He stressed that proactive measures are essential in safeguarding lives and property, especially in densely populated urban areas like Ilorin.
The incident underscores the importance of fire safety awareness and preparedness in Nigeria, where electrical fires remain a significant threat. With increasing reliance on electricity and frequent power surges, the risk of fire outbreaks continues to grow. Authorities are urging communities to adopt preventive measures and remain vigilant.
As Kwara State continues to strengthen its emergency response systems, the successful containment of this fire serves as a reminder of the critical role played by well-trained firefighters. The incident also highlights the need for greater public education on electrical safety to prevent future tragedies.
