A man identified as Ebenezer Frimpong has been arrested for allegedly stealing an armoured vehicle belonging to the Ghana Police Service in Nkawie Market, Ashanti Region, in a brazen incident that shocked local residents and raised concerns over security in public areas. The theft occurred when the vehicle’s driver momentarily stepped away, leaving the engine running in the crowded market. Frimpong allegedly seized the opportunity, entered the vehicle, and drove off, prompting an immediate response from security personnel.
According to Zagazola Makama, the incident unfolded in broad daylight, highlighting the vulnerability of law enforcement assets even in busy, populated zones. The driver’s brief absence created a critical security lapse, which Frimpong exploited to make off with the heavily guarded police vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle speeding away from the market, drawing attention and alarm from nearby traders and pedestrians.
Law enforcement agencies quickly mobilized following the theft, launching a coordinated pursuit along the Nkawie–Mim route. Officers tracked the suspect’s movements with precision, relying on local intelligence and surveillance to narrow down his escape path. The operation culminated in Frimpong’s arrest near Mim, where he was intercepted without resistance or further violence.
A security source confirmed that the suspect was apprehended safely, and the armoured vehicle was recovered in perfect condition. “The suspect was apprehended without further incident, and the vehicle was recovered intact,” the source stated. Authorities emphasized that no damage was sustained to the vehicle, which has since been returned to police custody for inspection and further processing.
Frimpong is currently in custody as investigators work to determine the full circumstances behind the theft. Questions remain about how the suspect gained access to the vehicle and whether he had prior knowledge or accomplices. The police are also reviewing security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future, particularly in high-traffic areas where officers may be temporarily exposed.
This incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance and improved security measures for police assets, especially during routine operations in public spaces. The recovery of the vehicle within hours reflects the efficiency of Ghana’s security apparatus, but also serves as a warning about lapses in operational discipline. As investigations continue, the case is expected to prompt a broader review of police vehicle management and driver protocols across the Ashanti Region and beyond.
