Residents Demand Justice After Tragic Death of 17-Year-Old in Benue

The death of 17-year-old Sesugh in Benue State has ignited public anger and calls for justice, with activist Ukan Kurugh accusing the police of distorting facts and prioritizing propaganda over accountability. The teenager, reportedly killed in broad daylight in front of witnesses, has left his family devastated, prompting widespread outrage across the state. Kurugh condemned the Benue State Police Command for what he described as a failure to deliver justice, emphasizing that the victim’s mother is now enduring unbearable grief while authorities focus on managing narratives rather than uncovering the truth.

In a statement shared online, Kurugh criticized the police spokesperson for what he called misleading statements that downplay the severity of the incident. He stressed that the family’s pain is being compounded by efforts to cover up the real circumstances surrounding Sesugh’s death. “A young boy died, a mother is crying herself to sleep. A family has been thrown into permanent pain yet your priority is propaganda instead of justice,” he said, highlighting the emotional toll on the victim’s loved ones.

Kurugh also accused security agencies of shielding powerful individuals while ordinary citizens suffer. He insisted that no official explanation can silence “the voice of innocent blood,” warning that justice will eventually prevail. His comments have resonated with many residents who are demanding a transparent and independent investigation into the teenager’s death. Public pressure is mounting as people call for accountability and an end to what they see as systemic cover-ups.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command has provided its own account of events, stating that three suspects—James Onuh, Atser Sesugh, and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena—were arrested by EFCC operatives on April 28, 2026, for alleged fraud and cybercrime activities. According to police, the suspects escaped from lawful custody at the EFCC facility in Makurdi on May 4, 2026, and have since gone into hiding. However, Kurugh and others have questioned whether this narrative fully explains the circumstances of Sesugh’s death, urging authorities to release all relevant details.

The incident has sparked conversations about police conduct, accountability, and the protection of lives in Benue State. As residents continue to demand answers, the case remains a focal point in discussions about justice and transparency in Nigeria’s security sector. The outcome of this investigation will likely shape public trust in law enforcement and influence future calls for reform.
