Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has successfully completed the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship screening exercise in Abuja, marking a key step toward the party’s 2027 governorship primary election in Lagos State. The screening, held on Saturday, was conducted by the APC Governorship Screening Committee and aimed to verify the credentials, records, and experiences of aspirants seeking to contest under the party’s banner. Hamzat, who participated in the process, described it as comprehensive, transparent, and in line with the democratic values upheld by the APC.
Speaking after the screening, Hamzat emphasized that the exercise was designed to confirm the accuracy and verifiability of all documents submitted by candidates. He noted that the committee reviewed his application thoroughly and asked detailed questions based on the information provided. “We submitted all required documents and the committee asked questions based on the information provided. It is basically to confirm that what you wrote is truly reflective of your experience and service,” he said.
The screening panel also sought further clarification on specific aspects of Hamzat’s professional background and years in public service. He explained that members of the committee probed into the various responsibilities he has held during his tenure in government, ensuring that his qualifications aligned with the expectations of the party. This rigorous assessment is part of the APC’s effort to ensure that only credible and qualified candidates proceed to the primary election.
Hamzat expressed confidence in the party’s internal processes and reaffirmed his dedication to the development and prosperity of Lagos State. He stressed that the final decision on who will represent the APC in the 2027 gubernatorial race lies with party members and the electorate. “I am very comfortable with my party and confident in the democratic process. Ultimately, the decision rests with party members and the people. Our responsibility is to continue offering our best in service to the state and the country,” he stated.
He also highlighted Lagos State’s role as a national model of innovation, governance, and development, urging leaders to remain focused on improving the lives of citizens. Hamzat’s successful screening positions him as a serious contender in the upcoming primary, as the APC prepares to select its candidate for the 2027 governorship election. His continued involvement signals a strong commitment to public service and leadership in Nigeria’s most populous state. As the political landscape evolves, Lagosians will closely watch how the APC’s internal processes shape the next chapter in the state’s governance.
