Osborn Nweze Umahi, son of Minister of Works David Umahi, has been declared the new chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, marking a significant political development in the region. The 28-year-old won the local government election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), securing victory after a campaign focused on grassroots mobilisation, economic growth, and improved local governance. His win comes amid growing interest in youth participation in Nigerian politics, especially at the local government level.
Umahi’s campaign emphasized innovation, efficiency, and private-sector principles to revamp local administration. He positioned himself as a representative of a new generation of leaders committed to transparency and results-driven governance. During his campaign, he engaged directly with residents, promising to address long-standing challenges such as poor infrastructure, unemployment, and inadequate public services.
Shortly after being declared winner, Umahi announced that he would not collect any salary or allowances during his tenure. In a statement, he explained that this decision was driven by a desire to channel all available resources into community development rather than personal gain. “I am here to serve, not to be served,” he said, pledging to use every naira for the betterment of Ohaozara’s people.
He also outlined key priorities for his administration, including the construction and rehabilitation of roads, support for youth entrepreneurship, creation of economic opportunities, and enhanced service delivery across the local government. Umahi stressed the importance of strengthening grassroots governance to ensure that policies reflect the needs of ordinary citizens.
As the son of former Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, Osborn’s victory adds another layer to the political dynamics in the state. His emergence reflects both family influence and a broader trend of younger politicians stepping into leadership roles. Despite his background, Umahi campaigned on merit, appealing to voters with a vision of modern, accountable governance.
The election was conducted peacefully, with observers noting a high voter turnout and minimal incidents. Results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, confirming Umahi’s lead over other candidates. His victory is expected to bring renewed focus on development projects in Ohaozara, a local government area with vast agricultural potential and untapped human capital.
With his pledge to forgo personal benefits and his emphasis on youth empowerment and infrastructure, Umahi’s leadership could set a precedent for future local government elections in Nigeria. His tenure will be closely watched as a test case for young, reform-minded leaders aiming to transform governance from the ground up.
