Two Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates have escaped from their abductors after being kidnapped alongside 14 other students traveling in a commercial bus in Benue State. The Benue State Police Command confirmed the development on Friday, stating that rescue operations are ongoing to secure the remaining abducted candidates. The incident occurred when the bus, a Toyota Hiace with registration number BGT 234 S4 belonging to Benue Links Limited, was intercepted by unknown gunmen along its route. The vehicle was en route to Otukpo, a major examination center, when the abduction took place.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, revealed that the driver of the bus had violated company policy by operating an unauthorised late-night journey. He also picked up passengers randomly along the route without issuing a formal manifest, which breached standard operating procedures for commercial transport. These lapses may have contributed to the vulnerability of the passengers during the abduction. The police have since arrested one suspect in connection with the incident, though the full identity and motive of the perpetrators remain under investigation.
In response to the crisis, the Benue State Police Command has deployed several tactical units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, to locate and rescue the remaining victims. The force is also coordinating with other sister agencies to intensify search and surveillance operations across the state. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The police have assured families and the public that all possible measures are being taken to ensure the safe return of the abducted candidates.
The abduction has raised concerns over the safety of students traveling for national examinations, especially during night hours. It also highlights the need for stricter enforcement of transport regulations and improved security measures along major highways. The incident has drawn attention from education stakeholders and security experts, who are calling for enhanced coordination between transport companies, security agencies, and government bodies to prevent similar occurrences.
As the investigation continues, families of the remaining abducted candidates are anxiously awaiting updates. The police have promised to keep them informed of developments. The escape of two candidates offers a glimmer of hope, but the focus remains on rescuing the others. This incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms to protect students and travelers across Nigeria.
