Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has issued a strict directive requiring all political office holders in his administration who have declared allegiance to or defected to other political parties to immediately resign their positions. The order, announced on Wednesday, underscores the governor’s commitment to maintaining loyalty, transparency, and integrity within the state’s public service. The directive applies to all appointed officials, regardless of rank or portfolio, who have switched political affiliations since assuming office under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
In a public notice released through his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, Governor Fintiri emphasized that continued service by individuals aligned with opposing parties presents a serious threat to governance. He warned that such actions could lead to sabotage, unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information, and deliberate obstruction of government policies and party strategies. The governor stressed that public office must remain free from partisan interference to ensure effective and impartial administration.
Affected appointees have been given a 48-hour window to submit their resignation letters to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government. Failure to comply within this timeframe will result in immediate termination of their appointments. The notice also states that non-compliance will lead to the cessation of all salaries and terminal benefits, including any entitlements due upon resignation or retirement.
The directive comes amid growing political realignments across Nigeria, where party defections have become increasingly common. Governor Fintiri’s move is seen as a firm stance against political opportunism and a reinforcement of the principle that public office should be held with loyalty to the governing party and the state’s interests. His administration aims to prevent any potential conflicts of interest that could undermine policy execution and public trust.
This decision reflects a broader trend in Nigerian governance, where executives are taking stronger measures to ensure that civil servants and political appointees remain aligned with the ruling party’s objectives. The governor’s action is expected to send a clear message to other officials across the country about the importance of loyalty and accountability in public service.
As Adamawa State prepares for upcoming elections and continues to implement key development projects, Governor Fintiri’s directive is likely to shape the dynamics of political appointments and party loyalty in the region. The move may also influence how other state governments handle similar issues in the future.
