The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing critique of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, with its National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, branding the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda as a “classic scam.” Speaking at the ADC National Convention in Abuja on Tuesday, Aregbesola called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing widespread insecurity, economic hardship, and unmet promises. He accused the APC of mismanaging the economy, leading to a sharp depreciation of the naira and skyrocketing fuel prices that have placed unbearable pressure on ordinary Nigerians.
Aregbesola emphasized that the promises made by the APC government in 2023 have not materialized, warning that the continued promotion of “renewed hope” is nothing more than political deception. “When exactly will this hope come to fruition? The answer is simple. It is a scam,” he declared. He argued that if the current administration were honest, it would step down rather than seek re-election after failing to deliver on key commitments. Instead, he said, the government is making desperate efforts to retain power, even at the expense of democratic principles.
The former Minister of Interior and ex-governor of Osun State also highlighted the worsening power crisis, stating that many Nigerians now receive only two hours of electricity daily, with some communities enduring weeks or months of complete darkness. He recalled that the administration had pledged that if it failed to provide consistent power, it would not seek re-election. “Today, power supply is far worse,” he said, adding that such a failure demands accountability and resignation from leadership.
On security, Aregbesola condemned the surge in violent attacks across the country, calling it clear evidence of leadership failure. He also accused the APC of normalizing criminality within the electoral process, undermining trust in Nigeria’s democracy. He raised alarms over rising poverty levels and the increasing number of children out of school, further illustrating the administration’s shortcomings.
Positioning the ADC as a viable alternative, Aregbesola described the party’s mission as a rescue operation to free Nigeria from what he termed the “strangulating grip” of the ruling party. He urged Nigerians to actively support the ADC, warning that neutrality in this political climate amounts to complicity in national decline. “We cannot allow this continued drift into hopelessness,” he concluded, stressing the urgency of change as the nation approaches the next electoral cycle.
