A total of 119 rounds of 7.62mm AK-47 live ammunition were discovered concealed in a bag along Kalshingi Road in Kwadon, Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, following a tip-off to security authorities. The discovery, made on May 19, 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m., was confirmed by DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the state police command’s spokesman. The ammunition was found hidden under a tree opposite a graveyard, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement officers.
The information leading to the recovery was relayed to the Divisional Police Officer of Kwadon Division, who swiftly mobilized a team of detectives to the scene. Upon arrival, the team located and retrieved the suspicious white sack, which was then thoroughly searched. In addition to the live ammunition, the police recovered two empty ammunition packets, two bottles containing moringa seeds, and one green bag. Despite the discovery, no suspect was apprehended at the time, as the area was immediately cordoned off and searched for any potential culprits.
Following the incident, the Gombe State Police Command has intensified surveillance and monitoring in the Kwadon area. Investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the ammunition and identify those responsible for its concealment. The police are working closely with intelligence units to gather more information that could lead to arrests and prevent further security threats.
DSP Abdullahi emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating insecurity, noting that timely intelligence from citizens played a crucial role in the successful recovery. He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities to security agencies. The Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, also commended the public for their proactive role in enhancing security and called on citizens to sustain their efforts in providing useful intelligence.
The discovery underscores the persistent threat of illegal arms circulation in the region and highlights the need for sustained vigilance. Security experts believe such findings are indicative of broader networks involved in arms trafficking, often linked to criminal or insurgent activities. Authorities are now reviewing the area’s security protocols to prevent future incidents.
This recovery is part of a broader effort by the Gombe State Police Command to strengthen security and restore public confidence. As investigations continue, the police remain committed to ensuring the safety and protection of lives and property across the state. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for community-police collaboration in maintaining peace and stability.
