The death of 39-year-old Abdulrazak Ibrahim while in the custody of vigilantes in Bakin Kura, Bauchi Local Government Area, has sparked a full-scale investigation by the Bauchi State Police Command. The incident, reported on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at approximately 6:39 pm, was brought to police attention by the chairman of the Bakin Kura Vigilante Group. Authorities have since launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Ibrahim’s death, which occurred during questioning related to a theft complaint filed by his own mother, Hauwa Ibrahim.
According to the police statement issued by SP Nafiu Habib, Public Relations Officer for the command, Ibrahim was summoned to the vigilante office to assist in recovering allegedly stolen property and identifying potential receivers. He was being questioned when he died, raising serious concerns about the conduct of the vigilante group during custodial procedures. The police expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as unfortunate and emphasizing the need for accountability.
Detectives from the ‘A’ Division Township were immediately deployed to the scene to begin a thorough investigation. Three vigilante members who were on duty at the time of the incident have been arrested and detained to aid in the probe. The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the matter be investigated fully to ensure justice is served and that no stone is left unturned.
Ibrahim’s body was transported to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Bauchi for preservation. An initial physical examination revealed no visible signs of violence or trauma on the corpse. However, authorities have confirmed that a formal autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. This step is crucial to establish whether foul play was involved or if other medical factors contributed to the tragedy.
The police have reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law and warned against jungle justice and extrajudicial actions. They stressed that all suspected offences must be handled through proper legal channels and that no individual or group should take the law into their own hands. The command urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that findings from the investigation will be made public in due course.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about the role and conduct of vigilante groups in Nigeria’s security landscape. As investigations continue, the outcome may influence future policies on community policing and the supervision of non-state security actors. The public awaits clarity, justice, and reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
