The Taraba State Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce conducted a major raid on Monday at suspected illegal gold mining sites in Mayo Kam and Gantu villages, located in Bali Local Government Area, arresting two suspects and recovering mining equipment. The operation, led by taskforce chairman Emmanuel Jamu, was the result of weeks of intelligence gathering and targeted remote areas known for illicit mining activities. Security operatives braved difficult terrain to reach the secluded mining camp, only to find that most miners had fled into nearby forests before their arrival, leaving behind tools and machinery.
Despite the escape of the majority of the miners, the taskforce successfully apprehended two individuals who were attempting to flee the scene. Officers seized several items linked to illegal mining, including pumping machines, diggers, generators, and mineral processing materials. These recovered items are now being examined as evidence in ongoing investigations. The taskforce emphasized that the operation was part of a broader effort to dismantle illegal mining networks operating within the state.
Emmanuel Jamu, speaking after the raid, warned that the government’s crackdown on illegal mining would continue without compromise. “We are here to send a clear message. Whether they are here or not, we will keep coming. They can run today, but they cannot run forever. They will face the full weight of the law,” he stated. Jamu also urged traditional rulers and community leaders to support the taskforce by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of remaining suspects.
The Taraba State government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the state’s mineral resources and ensuring that all mining activities comply with legal frameworks. The two arrested suspects are currently in custody, and the taskforce has announced plans for further operations in other high-risk areas across the state. These actions are part of a sustained campaign to curb environmental degradation, prevent loss of revenue, and maintain security in mining zones.
Illegal mining remains a persistent challenge in Taraba, often linked to environmental damage, security threats, and economic losses. The taskforce’s latest operation underscores the state’s resolve to enforce mining laws and hold offenders accountable. As more intelligence is gathered, authorities expect to dismantle additional illegal mining camps in the coming weeks. The government’s efforts signal a long-term strategy to regulate the mining sector and promote sustainable development in the region.
