Gov Adeleke Seeks Visa Ban for Political Leaders Over Alleged Election Violence

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called for economic sanctions and visa bans against political figures accused of inciting and supporting violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state. In a strong statement delivered during a meeting with a British government delegation in Osogbo on Monday, Adeleke condemned the rising tide of political violence, including killings and gun attacks, and urged both local and international authorities to take decisive action. He emphasized that no individual, regardless of political influence, should be above the law when it comes to undermining peace and security.

The governor praised the efforts of security agencies in responding to the violence but stressed the need for intensified operations. He called for the arrest of all suspects and their alleged sponsors, regardless of political affiliation, to send a clear message that violence will not be tolerated. Adeleke reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy, stating that even if his own son were involved in any act of violence, he would be arrested without hesitation. “We harbour no thugs anywhere and the police can and should arrest any suspect. There must be strict law enforcement,” he declared.

Adeleke pointed to recent incidents, including the killing of an Accord Party member in Ijebu-Jesa, as evidence of the escalating danger. He argued that public statements and actions by certain political leaders have directly contributed to the unrest, justifying the need for international intervention. He urged the global community to impose visa bans and economic sanctions on those found to be sponsoring or enabling political violence. “We seek visa bans against politicians sponsoring killings and violent attacks. We also advocate similar sanctions against security chiefs aiding and abetting such anti-democratic activities,” he said.

He made it clear that elections should never be marred by bloodshed and that Osun State deserves the right to choose its leaders in peace. The governor’s appeal comes as part of broader efforts to ensure a credible and peaceful electoral process. The British delegation, led by Senior Political Adviser Wale Adebajo, welcomed the governor’s stance and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria. Adebajo noted that the visit was part of ongoing pre-election peacebuilding engagements in Osun State.

The delegation expressed its intention to engage with political parties, government institutions, and civil society to promote a calm and secure environment before, during, and after the August 15 poll. They emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, and pledged continued support for democratic processes in Nigeria. As the election approaches, the call for accountability and peace grows louder, with stakeholders across the political spectrum urged to prioritize stability over rivalry. The outcome of these efforts will shape not only Osun’s future but also the broader narrative of democratic governance in Nigeria.
