The Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers and recovered two firearms during coordinated patrol operations across the state, marking a significant step in the ongoing fight against armed criminality. The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Crack Squad on April 23, 2024, in separate but simultaneous operations in Asaba and its environs. The police stated that the suspects were apprehended based on suspicious behavior and intelligence-driven surveillance, reinforcing the command’s commitment to proactive policing.
In the first operation, RRS officers intercepted a 28-year-old man named Chinoso Igwemma around 4:25 p.m. along Ugbolu/Asaba Road during a routine stop-and-search exercise. His nervous demeanor and evasive actions triggered a thorough search, which led to the recovery of a fabricated Beretta pistol. The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation to determine his involvement in other criminal activities. Police officials confirmed that the firearm was not licensed and was likely intended for illegal use.
Meanwhile, operatives of the Crack Squad conducted a routine patrol in the Bonsaac area of Asaba, where they stopped a tricycle carrying three male passengers. The suspects were identified as Umuadi Benjamin Chinecherem, 30; Nwabueze Kelvin, 28; and Okonkwo Celestine, 30. A detailed search of the vehicle and the suspects yielded one locally made cut-to-size pistol loaded with a single live cartridge. The police noted that the weapon’s crude construction suggests it was assembled for clandestine use, possibly in armed robberies or other violent crimes.
Interrogation revealed that the trio is allegedly involved in criminal acts targeting innocent citizens, including the theft of personal belongings and possible armed assaults. The police are now working to trace their criminal network and identify other accomplices who may be involved in similar activities. Authorities have also intensified surveillance in high-risk areas to prevent further incidents.
The Commissioner of Police for Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He emphasized that the command remains dedicated to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies. Oyeniyi assured the public that the police are committed to dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace and security across the state.
These arrests come amid rising concerns over armed robbery and insecurity in parts of Delta State. The recovery of firearms and the apprehension of suspects send a strong message to would-be criminals. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. As the investigation continues, authorities expect more arrests to follow, further strengthening public safety in the region.
