The Ekiti State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the alleged murder of 25-year-old Kehinde Onizeokaraga by her husband, Sodiq Ibrahim, during a marital dispute in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. The incident occurred on Wednesday when Ibrahim, a meat seller from Kogi State, allegedly attacked his wife with a machete during an attempt to resolve their ongoing marital issues. The victim, also from Kogi State, was reportedly preparing to leave Ado Ekiti when she was lured to the residence of her father’s friend, unaware that her husband would be present.
According to sources close to the case, Kehinde had previously left Ibrahim’s home due to irreconcilable differences in their marriage. Despite this, Ibrahim reportedly made recent efforts to reconcile, which the woman resisted. The confrontation escalated violently when he allegedly used a machete to attack her multiple times, leading to her death. After the attack, Ibrahim fled the scene and remained at large as of Thursday, while Kehinde’s body was taken to a mortuary for further examination.
Yussuf Lawrence, a cousin of the deceased, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called on law enforcement to intensify efforts to apprehend the suspect. He revealed that the killing took place during a mediation attempt involving several individuals who had gathered to help resolve the couple’s conflict. Lawrence emphasized that Kehinde’s family is devastated and stressed that she did not deserve such a violent end. He also alleged that some people connected to the incident have been arrested and detained by police, while Ibrahim continues to evade capture.
Lawrence added that Ibrahim fled with Kehinde’s mobile phone, which the family believes may contain crucial evidence or messages that could aid investigators. “We want Sadiq (Ibrahim) to be found and arrested. We want justice for Kehinde. Her parents are in pain, and my family is in serious agony,” he said, underscoring the emotional toll on the victim’s loved ones.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and stated that Commissioner of Police Michael Falade has directed a thorough investigation. Abutu assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the perpetrator is apprehended and brought to justice. The case has sparked concern over domestic violence and the safety of women in Nigeria, particularly during marital disputes. Authorities are urging anyone with information about Ibrahim’s whereabouts to come forward to assist in the ongoing probe.
