Mr Samuel Apata, the member representing Somolu Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, claiming he was denied the party’s return ticket despite winning the poll by a significant margin. The lawmaker, who emerged victorious with 9,081 votes, expressed shock that a candidate who secured only 677 votes — placing third — was declared the APC’s candidate for the 2027 election. Apata insists the outcome does not reflect the will of party members and has appealed to President Tinubu, whom he described as a man of justice, to ensure fairness and due process are upheld.
Speaking during an interview in Lagos on Wednesday, Apata maintained that his victory in the primary election was clear and undisputed. He emphasized his loyalty to the APC and his commitment to the party’s ideals, stating that he remains grateful to President Tinubu for providing the platform that enabled his political journey. “I believe in party supremacy and due process,” he said, reiterating his confidence that the president will investigate the matter and restore justice. He also noted that he had contested for the chairmanship of Bariga Local Council Development Area twice and had run for the Lagos State House of Assembly on two previous occasions before finally securing victory in 2023.
Apata highlighted his developmental achievements in Bariga, including the rehabilitation of Ariyo and Grace streets, as well as the construction and renovation of six schools within his constituency. He argued that his three years in the legislature have strengthened his ability to serve constituents effectively and position him to deliver even greater results if given another term. The lawmaker stressed that his experience and dedication to public service make him the most suitable candidate to represent the people of Somolu Constituency II in the next legislative session.
Despite the controversy, Apata reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s administration and pledged to continue working for the party’s success. He expressed hope that the APC leadership would address the primary election irregularities transparently and in accordance with party rules. His appeal underscores growing concerns within the party about transparency and fairness in internal elections, especially as the 2027 general elections draw closer. The outcome of this matter could influence party unity and voter confidence in the APC’s credibility across Lagos State.
