Two pupils from Nsulu community in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State were kidnapped last week by an unidentified tricycle operator while returning from school, according to the Abia State Police Command. The incident, which occurred during heavy rainfall, has sparked concern among parents and community leaders across the region. The police have confirmed the abduction and launched an investigation to locate the missing children and apprehend the suspect.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Isiala Ngwa North Area has received a formal report of the incident and is coordinating efforts to resolve the case. DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for Abia State, confirmed the development in response to inquiries from DAILY POST. She stated that the investigation is ongoing and that all available resources are being deployed to trace the whereabouts of the two young victims.
According to the police account, the children were walking home from school when they encountered a tricycle rider who offered them a ride. The operator, who appeared friendly, stopped the tricycle at a remote location and claimed he had run out of fuel. He then handed over a thousand Naira and a jerry can to the older of the two children, instructing them to buy fuel from a nearby shop. While the children were away, the tricycle operator disappeared with the younger child still inside the vehicle.
When the older children returned with the fuel, they found the tricycle abandoned and their younger companions missing. The incident has left the community in shock, with families and neighbours searching for any leads. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that every detail could be crucial to solving the case.
Barrah Chiedozie, Chairman of the Umuosu Development Association, confirmed the abduction in a statement issued over the weekend. He expressed deep concern over the safety of children in the area and called for increased security measures. Chiedozie also noted that despite extensive searches and community efforts, the two pupils have not yet been found.
The case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of children in rural areas, especially during inclement weather when they may be more likely to accept rides from strangers. Authorities are now reviewing security protocols in schools and communities to prevent similar incidents. Parents are being advised to remain vigilant and to educate their children about the dangers of accepting rides from unknown individuals.
As the investigation continues, the Abia State Police Command remains committed to resolving the case and bringing the perpetrators to justice. The safety of children remains a top priority, and officials are working closely with local leaders and community members to ensure a swift resolution. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to protect young lives across Nigeria.
