At least five people died and eight others were seriously injured in a tragic road accident that occurred on Sunday in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State. The incident involved a passenger-laden trailer carrying approximately 40 people and a stationary tanker, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The crash, which happened along a busy highway, has sparked concern over road safety and vehicle maintenance in the region.
The NEMA Desk Officer in Agaie, Hussaini Guregi, confirmed the details of the accident. He explained that the trailer was en route from Gusau in Zamfara State to Shagamu in Ogun State when the collision took place. The driver of the trailer attempted to overtake the faulty tanker that had been left unattended on the road, but lost control during the maneuver, leading to the crash. Guregi noted that five victims died instantly at the scene.
The eight injured passengers were rushed to the General Hospital in Agaie for emergency medical treatment. Medical personnel are currently attending to them, with their conditions described as serious. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital Agaie mortuary, pending identification and arrangements for burial. Authorities are still gathering information to determine the full extent of the incident.
Early findings suggest that the accident was caused by a combination of factors, including the presence of a faulty tanker left on the road and the driver’s attempt to overtake without sufficient space. This highlights ongoing issues with road safety, vehicle maintenance, and driver behavior in Nigeria. The incident has drawn attention to the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better roadside management.
NEMA and other relevant agencies are continuing their investigation into the accident. They are working to identify the owner of the faulty tanker and determine whether proper safety protocols were followed. The agency has also urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when navigating highways with heavy traffic and potential hazards.
This tragic event underscores the dangers of poorly maintained vehicles and reckless driving on Nigerian roads. As investigations proceed, families of the victims are left mourning their loss, while survivors recover from their injuries. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety measures across the country.
