The Zamfara State chapter of the Action Alliance (AA) has condemned the violent attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Aare Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, calling it a direct assault on democracy. The incident occurred on Saturday during a burial ceremony in Ekusa, Odo Otin Local Government Area of Osun State. In a statement issued on Sunday in Gusau, the state chairman of the party, Shehu Hussaini Waziri, expressed deep concern over the incident and urged security agencies to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Waziri described the attack as a cowardly attempt to intimidate opposition political parties and undermine democratic principles in Nigeria. He emphasized that such acts threaten the foundation of a free and fair electoral process. “This cowardly act is a direct assault on democracy and an attempt to intimidate the opposition,” Waziri stated, reiterating the party’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and national development despite the violence.
The AA leadership called on all security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted. They stressed that no individual or group should be allowed to operate with impunity, especially when targeting political figures engaged in legitimate democratic activities. The party remains resolute in its mission to promote justice and national unity, even in the face of such threats.
Waziri urged party members and supporters to remain calm, law-abiding, and peaceful, avoiding any actions that could escalate tensions. He emphasized that allowing security forces to carry out their duties without interference is crucial to maintaining public order and ensuring justice prevails. The chairman also highlighted the importance of safeguarding political actors and ordinary citizens, noting that security is a fundamental pillar of Nigeria’s democratic process.
The attack on Omoaje has raised concerns about the safety of political candidates and the broader environment for democratic participation in the country. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, incidents like this underscore the need for stronger protection mechanisms for political figures and increased accountability for security agencies. The Action Alliance’s response reflects a growing call for transparency, justice, and the protection of democratic rights across the nation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy, even as political parties continue to campaign for the future of the country. The outcome of the investigation into the attack will be closely watched by political observers and citizens alike, as it may set a precedent for how the government responds to threats against opposition figures in the lead-up to the next election.
