Wike: You Cannot Become Opposition Party Without Winning Election

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has declared that no political group can legitimately claim to be a true opposition party without first winning elections, a statement made during his visit to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja on Friday. Speaking at Wadata House, Wike emphasized that electoral success is the only credible measure of political relevance in a democracy. He challenged those who position themselves as leaders of the opposition, stating that they have not contested and won any election, and therefore lack the legitimacy to claim that role.

Wike’s remarks came during a meeting with members of the PDP’s newly elected National Working Committee (NWC), where he reaffirmed his support for the party’s leadership. He stressed that his presence was a gesture of solidarity and loyalty, aimed at strengthening party unity after a period of internal turmoil. “My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I have come to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee,” he said, acknowledging that the party had faced significant challenges but was now on the path to recovery.

The Minister acknowledged the existence of internal crises within the PDP but expressed confidence that the party was emerging from them. “Yes, we have crisis, and we have almost come out of it. It will require hard work and sacrifice to move the party forward,” he stated. He urged the new leadership to prioritize reconciliation, particularly by reaching out to members who had left the party, noting that many were still interested in returning. “Reach out to them. Most are concerned about opportunities, including tickets. You know what to do,” he advised.

Wike also encouraged the leadership to remain focused despite ongoing political and legal battles, citing recent victories in the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal as evidence of the party’s resilience. “We have defeated them at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. The same God will see us through. Stay focused and work as a team,” he added. His comments reflect a broader call for unity and strategic planning as the PDP prepares for future elections.

In response, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed affirmed that the new leadership is committed to repositioning the party and restoring public trust. He emphasized the importance of rebuilding internal cohesion and preparing for electoral contests ahead. The visit by Wike, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, underscores the significance of unity within the PDP as it seeks to regain its footing in the national political landscape. As the party moves forward, the focus remains on healing divisions and consolidating strength for upcoming elections.
