The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced new resolutions from its National Executive Committee (NEC) aimed at institutionalizing the party and ensuring long-term political sustainability across Nigeria. The resolutions, released in a statement by Osa Director, the National Publicity Secretary, emphasize party supremacy, strict financial accountability, and the need for all members and affiliated groups to operate under the party’s guidance. These measures are part of a broader strategy to position the NDC as a strong, enduring political institution rather than a personality-driven or short-term political vehicle.
The NEC resolutions stress that all programs, policies, and appointments by governments elected on the NDC platform must be made in consultation with the party structure. This includes top-level appointments, with the exception of personal staff. The party insists that members must align their personal interests with the party’s goals, reinforcing the principle that the NDC remains supreme in all matters. Affiliated groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) linked to the party are also required to function under its direction and cannot operate independently or in parallel to the party’s official structure.
To strengthen governance, the NDC has established a comprehensive Code of Conduct for all party officials and candidates. A committee led by the National Legal Adviser has been tasked with developing the framework and guidelines for this code. Additionally, a National Reconciliation Committee has been inaugurated to address grievances among party members and foster unity. The party is committed to building an institutional framework that transcends individual leadership, ensuring that the NDC is not seen as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) or a fleeting political movement.
The NDC also emphasized financial probity and transparency in the management of party resources. All officers are required to account strictly for party funds, which must be used solely for party business. Candidates at all levels are mandated to disclose fully any funding received and contributions made to campaign accounts. These funds must be channeled through dedicated party campaign accounts, including those for presidential and governorship elections, at local government, state, zonal, and national levels.
The party called on all members to remain committed to its growth and sustainability for future generations. It reiterated that total allegiance must be given to the party and the national interest at all times. These resolutions mark a significant step in the NDC’s journey to become a disciplined, transparent, and resilient political force in Nigeria’s democratic landscape. The party’s focus on institutionalization suggests a long-term vision to influence Nigerian politics beyond electoral cycles.
