Ex-Nigerian Broadcaster Roseline Ogunro Elected Mayor of Islington: A Historic Win Celebrated Across Communities

Roseline Ogunro, a Nigerian-born broadcaster and community advocate, has been appointed Mayor of Islington in London, United Kingdom, on May 27, 2024, marking a historic milestone for British-Nigerian leadership and women in public service. The 73-year-old former Radio Nigeria announcer, who broke gender barriers in the 1970s, brings decades of experience in volunteering and disability advocacy to her new role. Her appointment reflects her long-standing commitment to community engagement and social inclusion, particularly in East Islington, where she will serve as a civic representative and ambassador.

Ogunro’s journey to the mayoral office is rooted in resilience and determination. She recalled how women were often sidelined in media and public life during her early career, saying, “You know how women were relegated to the background, even up to the point that women couldn’t read the news when I joined. As you heard, I was one of those to blaze the trail at that time.” Her voice, once a familiar presence on Radio Nigeria’s “Family Favourite” programme every Sunday afternoon, captivated listeners with its soothing tone and carefully curated music selections. Veteran broadcaster Soni Irabor praised her contributions, noting her impact on Nigerian radio during a pivotal era.

The appointment holds deep personal significance for Ogunro, who described it as “meaning the world to me.” She emphasized that the role allows her to connect with people across East Islington, from young to old, and from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. “I don’t only have to know my ward, which is St. Peter’s and Canalside, but I get to go all over East Islington and meet the diverse community that we have,” she said. Her dedication to service extends beyond the UK; she was actively involved in volunteering in Nigeria and remains a member of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland, an organization that supports women’s empowerment through professional networks.

Ogunro’s career has been shaped by both triumph and adversity. In February 1976, she was trapped inside the Radio Nigeria studios for 27 hours following the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, enduring a tense and dangerous situation as the announcer on duty during a critical moment in Nigeria’s history. Her calm presence during that crisis underscored her professionalism and courage. She holds a diploma in English and a bachelor’s degree in law, further highlighting her academic and intellectual achievements.

As Mayor of Islington, Roseline Ogunro will serve as a symbol of perseverance, diversity, and community leadership. Her appointment not only celebrates her personal journey but also inspires future generations of Nigerian and African women in public life. Her story continues to resonate as a powerful example of how dedication, service, and resilience can lead to meaningful impact on a global stage.
