Troops of Headquarters 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have arrested three suspected arms dealers and recovered weapons and ammunition during an operation in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State under Operation Eastern Sanity II. The operation, carried out in the early hours of June 7, 2026, targeted arms proliferation in the Amaetiti Iheshiowa community. Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Mazinho Attah, confirmed the development in a press release issued from Ohafia, Abia State.
The Nigerian Army stated that the cordon-and-search operation was conducted jointly by troops from the 14 Brigade Garrison and the 14 Military Intelligence Regiment, alongside other security agencies. The operation was based on credible intelligence indicating the presence of illegal arms and ammunition within the community. This proactive measure was part of broader efforts to curb criminal activities and maintain peace in the region.
During the operation, three suspects were apprehended: Francis Ifere, 37; Oso Kalu, 40; and Ifere Oti, 32. These individuals were found in possession of seven locally fabricated Dane guns, 22 live cartridges, and a motorcycle. Additionally, a bus allegedly belonging to Stephen Kalu was impounded after its owner fled the scene before troops arrived. The recovery of these weapons underscores the ongoing threat posed by illegal arms circulation in the area.
The Nigerian Army emphasized that such operations are crucial in disrupting criminal networks and preventing acts of violence. Troops across various battalion areas continue to conduct night patrols and routine security sweeps to deny criminal elements the freedom to operate. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety of lives and property in Abia State and surrounding regions.
The success of this operation reflects the commitment of the Nigerian Army to maintaining security and restoring public confidence. Authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious activities to security agencies to support these efforts. With continued vigilance and intelligence-driven operations, the military aims to reduce crime and promote lasting peace in the region.
This latest development in Operation Eastern Sanity II highlights the ongoing challenges of arms proliferation in southeastern Nigeria. The recovery of locally made weapons and the arrest of suspects signal a sustained crackdown on illegal arms trafficking. As security forces remain active, communities are encouraged to cooperate fully to ensure long-term stability and safety.
