The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State on Thursday, May 23, 2024. Obi’s convoy was reportedly blocked by a group of suspected thugs near Yelwata community, where over 270 people were killed in a recent violent incident. The NDC claims the attackers, armed with dangerous weapons, were led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. The party insists the visit was purely humanitarian, aimed at mourning with victims and offering solidarity.
According to a statement issued by the NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the convoy was stopped before reaching Yelwata, despite Obi’s intention to meet with families affected by the massacre. Obi himself recounted the incident, stating: “I arrived in Benue this morning at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting the victims and families affected by the horrific killings in Yelwata. Unfortunately, we were stopped from proceeding to the community by thugs chanting, ‘Peter Obi, go back.’” He emphasized that his visit had no political motive, but was meant to show empathy and listen to survivors’ stories.
The NDC expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as a troubling act that undermines national unity during a time of grief. Obi reiterated his commitment to peace, saying: “I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity during a moment of unimaginable pain.” He stressed that Nigerians must stand together against violence and avoid actions that deepen divisions.
The party called on the Benue State Government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. It demanded justice for the perpetrators and guaranteed safety for all citizens and leaders who seek to show compassion during tragedies. The NDC also reaffirmed its commitment to restoring government’s core duty: protecting every Nigerian’s life. Despite being denied access, the party stated that its hearts and prayers remain with the victims and their families in Yelwata.
