Troops Arrest Suspected Illegal Mining Kingpin and Three Others in FCT

Troops of the 176 Guards Battalion have arrested a suspected illegal mining kingpin and three other suspects during a coordinated raid on illegal mining sites in Dukpa Community, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The operation, conducted on July 13 at approximately 8:30 p.m., followed intelligence gathered after the arrest of a group of illegal miners in the same area on July 7. Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the details in a post shared on X on Wednesday night, highlighting the military’s continued efforts to combat illicit mining activities in the FCT.

The troops stormed several identified illegal mining sites, where they apprehended the suspected sponsor believed to be the mastermind behind the operations. Alongside him, three other individuals were also taken into custody. During preliminary questioning, the main suspect reportedly confessed to financing and orchestrating the illegal mining activities. He further admitted to recruiting labourers from Katsina State to carry out the mining operations in the FCT, underscoring the cross-state nature of the criminal network.

Among the items recovered during the raid were a motorcycle, two digging tools, seven filter carpets, seven pumping machine nozzles, 53 wraps of suspected cannabis, and ₦360,400 in cash. Additional mining equipment was also seized. These findings suggest a well-organized and sustained illegal mining operation, with significant financial and logistical backing. The suspects and all recovered items are currently in military custody, pending further investigation before being handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.

The operation is part of Operation MESA, an ongoing initiative by security agencies aimed at dismantling illegal mining networks across the FCT. The campaign seeks to protect Nigeria’s natural resources, prevent environmental degradation, and address the rising security threats linked to illegal mining activities. These threats include armed clashes, community unrest, and the proliferation of illicit substances, as evidenced by the cannabis found during the raid.

The arrest of the suspected kingpin and his associates marks a significant breakthrough in the government’s fight against illegal mining in the FCT. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and inter-agency collaboration. As security forces continue to target the root causes of illegal mining, including funding and recruitment, the long-term goal remains to restore order and safeguard national interests. This operation sends a clear message that illegal mining will not be tolerated, and those involved will face the full force of the law.
