An 18-year-old student has been arrested in Jalingo, Taraba State, over suspected cult-related activities, following the recovery of an illegal firearm from him. The incident occurred on July 14, 2026, after a report was filed by the management of Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau Institute for Koranic Memorization. The arrest was carried out by operatives from the GRA Division of the Taraba State Police Command, who responded to the alert received at approximately 11:00 p.m. The suspect, identified as Usman A. Usman, is a senior prefect from Sansani, Gassol Local Government Area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between two students at the institution. Usman was found in possession of a mini revolver pistol, though it was without ammunition. According to police, he allegedly had the firearm with the intention of intimidating another student involved in the dispute. The weapon was immediately recovered and taken into custody, while Usman was arrested for further questioning.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to obtaining the revolver from another student, Akilu Alhassan, who is currently at large. The police have launched a manhunt to locate Alhassan and other suspected cult members believed to be involved in the incident. The Commissioner of Police in Taraba State, Morkwap Sebastian Dongshal, has directed that the case be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation. This move aims to uncover the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the illegal firearm possession and any potential network of involvement.
Dongshal emphasized the police command’s unwavering commitment to combating cultism, illegal possession of firearms, and other violent crimes in the state. He called on parents, guardians, school authorities, and community leaders to remain vigilant and actively collaborate with security agencies. Reporting suspicious activities, he stressed, is crucial to preventing threats to public safety. The police also reassured residents of their ongoing efforts to protect lives and property and to maintain peace and security across Taraba State.
This arrest highlights growing concerns over the infiltration of cultism and gun violence in educational institutions. Authorities are now under increased pressure to ensure schools remain safe spaces for students. The case underscores the need for stronger collaboration between law enforcement and educational stakeholders to prevent similar incidents in the future.
