Taraba APC Crisis: Kefas Urges Candidates Against Arrogance and Exclusion After Electoral Wins

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has called for unity and humility within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of upcoming elections, urging successful candidates to reach out to those who did not secure party tickets. Speaking at a reconciliation dinner held in Jalingo on Tuesday, the governor emphasized that electoral victories should not lead to arrogance or exclusion, but rather to inclusivity and collective effort. He described the gathering as a “family meeting” aimed at healing divisions, rebuilding trust, and strengthening the party’s foundation across the state.

Kefas acknowledged that the recent ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as the primary elections, had stirred mixed emotions among party members. Some felt satisfied with the outcomes, while others expressed disappointment or a sense of being left out. The governor admitted that these feelings were valid and expressed sincere regret for any pain or misunderstanding that may have arisen. He clarified that his decisions, including his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, were never meant to suppress legitimate political ambitions or undermine the contributions of party stakeholders.

He explained that the choices made during the political process were intended to prevent prolonged internal conflicts that could weaken the party and divide the people of Taraba State. The governor stressed that reconciliation must now take precedence over political differences, and that party contests should not create permanent enemies or destroy long-standing relationships. He urged successful aspirants to demonstrate humility and reach out to those who lost, reminding them that no candidate can succeed alone.

Kefas also appealed to those who did not emerge victorious to remain committed to the APC, assuring them that political opportunities extend beyond a single election cycle. He pledged to deepen consultations with party leaders and stakeholders at all levels — from ward to state — and emphasized that reconciliation would not end with the dinner but would continue through sustained dialogue. He insisted that unity should go beyond appointments and positions, and that respect, consultation, inclusion, and recognition are essential for building a stronger party.

The governor called for an end to divisions between old and new APC members, declaring that there should be “only one APC in Taraba State.” He promised to lead with humility, listen to constructive criticism, and broaden consultations in decision-making. He reminded party members that politics should ultimately focus on improving citizens’ lives through better security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, electricity, employment, and agricultural development.

Kefas urged all stakeholders to embrace forgiveness, rebuild trust, and unite ahead of future elections. “Let tonight mark the beginning of a new chapter founded on respect, forgiveness, consultation, discipline, and shared purpose,” he said. He expressed confidence that a united APC would be better positioned to earn the trust of Taraba’s people and achieve electoral success. The governor’s appeal underscores the importance of unity in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially as the country prepares for critical elections.
