The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspects linked to the vandalisation of critical railway infrastructure worth N200 million, marking a major breakthrough in the fight against economic sabotage in the state. The suspects were apprehended on 14 July 2026 at Gambari, Orile-Igbon area, after a tip-off from a vigilant member of the public led to a swift response by police operatives. The arrest was part of the command’s ongoing efforts to protect national infrastructure and ensure public safety.
The suspects, identified as Waheed Ayinde (54), Muhammed Sani (27), and Hassan Ibrahim (22), were caught in the act of illegally transporting stolen railway tracks. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, the recovered rail tracks are estimated to be worth approximately N200,000,000. The operation was carried out by the Command Monitoring Unit, which mobilised quickly upon receiving credible intelligence.
The suspects were intercepted at around 1:45 p.m. before the stolen materials could be moved to their final destination. Along with the suspects, police recovered a HOWO truck with registration number CAL 972 XA, believed to have been used to transport the stolen railway tracks. The vehicle is registered in Cross River State, indicating possible cross-state criminal activity.
Ayanlade stated that this arrest reflects the command’s commitment to tackling economic sabotage and protecting critical national assets. He emphasized that the police will continue to work closely with the public to gather intelligence and dismantle criminal networks involved in infrastructure vandalism. The recovered rail tracks are vital components of Nigeria’s rail network, and their theft poses serious risks to transportation and economic development.
