Yunusa Tanko has stepped down as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement to assume a new role as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to former Vice President Peter Obi. The transition comes ahead of the 2027 general elections and marks a strategic shift in leadership within the movement’s national structure. In a personally issued statement titled “Acceptance of New Assignment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria,” Tanko explained that his new position demands full attention and presence across the region. He emphasized that this move is aimed at deepening political engagement, mobilization, and coordination in Northern Nigeria.
Tanko served as National Coordinator for two years, during which he worked to strengthen the movement’s organizational framework nationwide. His tenure saw efforts to expand the Obidient Movement’s reach and influence, particularly among youth and grassroots supporters. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Tanko stated that his new role will focus on building political alliances, engaging stakeholders, and ensuring the movement’s message resonates across all states in the North. He expressed confidence that the movement’s mission remains bigger than any individual office or position.
In his statement, Tanko announced that Dr Moses Paul, widely known as Dr Mo, will take over as the new National Coordinator. He praised Dr Mo for bringing the energy, inclusiveness, and daily dedication required to lead the movement during this critical period. “He will give the national coordination the daily attention, energy and inclusiveness that this critical period demands,” Tanko wrote. This leadership change is expected to enhance operational efficiency and broaden the movement’s base nationally.
Tanko’s decision reflects a broader strategy to decentralize responsibilities and focus on regional strengths. As Political Adviser to Peter Obi in Northern Nigeria, he will work closely with local leaders, civil society groups, and young activists to build momentum for the 2027 elections. His experience in political mobilization and grassroots organization positions him well for this expanded role. Meanwhile, Dr Mo’s appointment brings fresh leadership to the national coordination team, with an emphasis on unity, discipline, and strategic planning.
The Obidient Movement continues to grow as a significant force in Nigerian politics, especially among younger voters and opposition supporters. Tanko’s transition underscores the movement’s commitment to adaptability and long-term vision. As he prepares to lead efforts in the North, he urged all members to remain united and focused on their shared goal: a more inclusive and democratic Nigeria. The movement’s future now hinges on both regional outreach and national cohesion, with Tanko and Dr Mo playing pivotal roles in shaping its direction.
