Edo Police Arrest 119 Suspected Criminals in Two-Month Crackdown

The Edo State Police Command has arrested 119 suspects for various criminal offences between March and April 2026, marking a significant boost in security operations across the state. The arrests were announced by the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, during a press conference held in Benin City on Tuesday, coinciding with the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). The suspects were apprehended in connection with serious crimes including kidnapping, sexual and gender-based violence, cultism, armed robbery, murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and rape or defilement.

According to Agbonika, the command also rescued 58 kidnapped victims within the same period, highlighting a marked improvement in response time and operational efficiency. The breakdown of the arrested suspects includes 55 kidnappers, 15 cultists, eight armed robbers, 15 murder suspects, and 23 individuals charged with rape and defilement. These figures reflect a coordinated and aggressive approach to tackling violent crime in Edo State.

During the operation, police recovered significant quantities of weapons and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, six pump-action guns, seven locally-made firearms, 13 cartridges, and other calibres of ammunition. The seizure underscores the command’s ability to dismantle criminal networks and disrupt illegal arms circulation within the state.

Agbonika attributed the successes to strategic policing, intelligence-led operations, and strong collaboration with sister security agencies, community leaders, and the media. He emphasized that the command has evolved to meet modern criminal threats, adopting advanced technologies such as drone surveillance, digital tracking systems, and high-tech monitoring tools. “Criminality has become more organized and sophisticated,” he said, “and our response must be equally intelligent and proactive.”

He reiterated his commitment to making the Edo State Police Command a model of professionalism and innovation, stating that since assuming office, he has prioritized intelligence-driven, technology-compliant, and operationally proactive policing. The VCRU, he noted, is a critical step in enhancing rapid response to violent crimes, particularly in the Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts.

Agbonika also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his unwavering support and praised the cooperation of all stakeholders. He assured the public that the command remains fully dedicated to safeguarding lives and property across the state. As Edo State continues to strengthen its security infrastructure, the launch of the VCRU signals a new era of proactive crime prevention and community protection.
