The Supreme Court’s judgment on April 30, 2026, has affirmed the legitimacy of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) leadership under National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, according to Mao Ohuabunwa, factional chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT). The ruling upholds the earlier decisions of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which nullified the controversial National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. Ohuabunwa, who aligns with the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike faction, emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision reinforces the legal standing of the current leadership structure and invalidates any authority derived from the Ibadan convention.
In a formal statement, Ohuabunwa declared that the judgment leaves no room for ambiguity: the Ibadan convention is legally null and void, and any structures or appointments arising from it have no constitutional basis. He stressed that the BoT, as the moral and ethical guardian of the party, fully respects and accepts the apex court’s ruling. The leadership under Mohammed and Anyanwu, he noted, remains the only valid and stabilizing authority guiding the PDP at the national level. This confirmation ensures continuity in the party’s operations and strengthens its institutional framework.
Ohuabunwa also highlighted that the PDP continues to function effectively under its recognized organs, in full compliance with the party’s constitution as amended in 2017. He reiterated that necessary constitutional measures will be taken to enhance unity, stability, and electoral preparedness. The BoT chairman urged all party members to remain disciplined, loyal, and focused on the party’s collective goals. He called for a renewed sense of commitment to the ideals and future of the PDP, emphasizing that this is a critical moment for collective responsibility.
To promote reconciliation, Ohuabunwa advised the National Working Committee to immediately establish a National Reconciliation Committee. The committee’s mandate will be to reach out to all aggrieved members across the country, fostering healing and unity within the party. He described the current phase as one requiring discipline, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to the party’s mission. The PDP, he affirmed, remains strong, resilient, and committed to delivering credible leadership to Nigeria. As the party moves forward, its focus will remain on rebuilding trust, strengthening internal structures, and preparing for upcoming electoral challenges.
