Troops Arrest Two Suspected Terrorists in Yobe, Recover Tactical Items

Troops of the 159 Battalion have arrested two suspected terrorists during a routine stop-and-search operation in Yobe State, marking a significant security development in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the region. The arrests took place on April 30 at around 8:00 a.m. at a military checkpoint located in B Company, Kanama, as part of heightened security measures in the area. The suspects, identified as Dahiru Mohammed, 40, and Ismail Adamu, 34, are natives of Geidam Local Government Area in Yobe State. They were intercepted while returning from Damasak market, where troops conducted a standard security check that led to their apprehension.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, confirmed the arrests in a statement shared on X. He noted that preliminary investigations revealed incriminating images on the suspects’ mobile phones, which suggest possible links to terrorist groups operating in the region. The discovery of such digital evidence has raised concerns about the continued use of communication technology by extremist elements to coordinate activities and recruit new members.

Items recovered from the suspects include two smartphones, seven hijabs, seven pairs of footwear, two towels, 107 veils, one umbrella, two praying mats, 34 turbans, one set of prayer beads, children’s clothing, and a total of N408,500 in cash. These items, according to Makama, are being scrutinized for their potential use in supporting insurgent operations or facilitating movement across borders. The presence of large quantities of veils and turbans may indicate efforts to blend into local populations or disguise identities during operations.

The suspects and all recovered materials are currently in military custody for further investigation. Authorities are expected to determine the extent of their involvement with terrorist networks and whether they were actively engaged in planning or supporting attacks. The military has emphasized that such operations are part of a broader strategy to dismantle insurgent infrastructure and restore peace in the region.

This arrest comes amid increased military activity in Yobe State, which has been a hotspot for Boko Haram and ISWAP activities. The successful interception of these individuals underscores the effectiveness of routine patrols and intelligence-led operations in disrupting terrorist movements. As security forces continue to strengthen their presence in vulnerable areas, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety of civilians and reclaiming territories affected by violence.

The incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in the Northeast and the importance of community vigilance. With continued collaboration between military units and local populations, authorities hope to prevent future attacks and maintain stability in the region.
