Sokoto Police Rescue Five Kidnap Victims in Gun Battle with Bandits

The Sokoto State Police Command, in collaboration with military forces, has successfully rescued five kidnapped victims following a violent bandit attack on the Rabbah–Maikujeru road in Sokoto State. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening around 8:45 p.m., saw suspected bandits ambush a Canter truck carrying charcoal and six passengers. The attackers blocked the road, opened fire, and abducted the occupants before fleeing into the nearby forest. Security operatives responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, deploying a joint team of police tactical units and troops from the military’s Forward Operating Base.

The police spokesperson, Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the details in a statement released on Thursday. He described the ensuing confrontation as a fierce gun battle that lasted for a considerable time. The security team managed to overpower the attackers, forcing them to retreat into the dense forest. Rufa’i emphasized that the operation was carried out with precision and coordination, highlighting the effectiveness of joint security efforts in combating banditry in the region.

Five of the six abducted individuals were rescued unharmed and have since been reunited with their families. The Canter truck, which was used in the attack, was also recovered and is now in police custody for further investigation. The sixth victim, however, is still missing. According to Rufa’i, this individual managed to escape into the forest during the initial chaos and is currently being searched for by security personnel. The police have not ruled out the possibility that the missing person may have sustained injuries or is hiding in the bush.

Efforts to track down the fleeing suspects are ongoing, with security forces intensifying their search operations in the surrounding areas. Neighbouring police divisions have been placed on high alert to prevent the attackers from infiltrating nearby communities or launching further attacks. Rufa’i urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies promptly. He stressed the importance of public cooperation in enhancing security and preventing future incidents.

The Sokoto State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state. They assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace in the affected areas. As security forces continue their operations, the incident underscores the persistent threat of banditry in northern Nigeria and the need for sustained vigilance and collaboration between security agencies and the public. The rescue operation marks a significant step in curbing criminal activities along key transportation routes in Sokoto State.
