Professor Christopher Imumolen, factional presidential candidate and National Chairman of the Accord Party, has formally withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, citing his leadership, economic reforms, and growing national support as key reasons for the decision. The announcement was made during a press conference in Lagos on Friday, following extensive consultations with party leaders and members. Imumolen emphasized that national interest should always outweigh personal ambition or partisan motives, stating that continuity in governance is essential for Nigeria’s progress.
He argued that despite ongoing challenges such as inflation and insecurity, Nigerians are beginning to recognize the long-term benefits of Tinubu’s reform agenda. “Tinubu will win because of his people-oriented programmes and the massive support he has received from different parts of the country,” Imumolen said. He added that there must be focus and forward momentum, warning that a new president in 2027 would have to restart from scratch. “There must be continuity. He has identified the challenges and we need to move from where we are to the next phase. That is why we are supporting him and he will win. My support is total.”
Imumolen highlighted ten specific reasons behind the party’s endorsement, starting with Tinubu’s courage in implementing difficult economic reforms, his demonstrated leadership capacity, and his commitment to progressive governance through continued development projects. He also praised the administration’s deliberate youth empowerment initiatives, efforts to bridge generational leadership gaps, and appointments of competent individuals into strategic public offices. These appointments, he noted, reflect confidence in young Nigerians and create meaningful opportunities for them to contribute to governance and national development.
The seventh to ninth reasons included placing national interest above personal ambition, ensuring policy continuity and political stability, and demonstrating transparency by announcing the endorsement early. The tenth reason was the party’s belief that collaboration in the national interest would strengthen democracy and accelerate national development. Imumolen dismissed claims that the endorsement stemmed from weak party structures, insisting it was based solely on performance and national necessity.
He further stated that no opposition candidate, including those from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), has a stronger chance of winning than Tinubu. Imumolen reiterated that his political journey has always been driven by service to Nigeria, not the pursuit of power. He stressed that sustained governance is crucial for attracting investment, creating jobs, strengthening institutions, and maintaining ongoing reforms across the country. The early announcement of the endorsement, he said, was meant to provide clarity and demonstrate openness to party members and supporters.
