The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has declared its firm resolve to form a united front to prevent the All Progressives Congress (APC) from taking over the State Government House in the 2027 general elections. This announcement was made on Thursday by Ikpegbu Emeka Yellow, Chairman of the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP in Abia, who warned of a coordinated effort by APC leaders to seize power. Yellow accused the APC of being dissatisfied with the current peace and development in Abia, suggesting their actions are aimed at destabilizing the state’s political environment.
Yellow emphasized the importance of unity among political parties in Abia, urging all leaders to rise above partisan interests to protect democracy. He described the APC’s alleged strategy as a “one-party plot” that must not be allowed to succeed in Abia or any other state. “We therefore call on all political leaders in Abia, irrespective of party affiliation, to rise above partisan interests and unite in defense of our democracy,” Yellow stated, highlighting the urgency of collective action.
He further pointed fingers at former PDP members who defected to the APC, accusing them of leading the destabilization efforts. According to Yellow, these individuals are undermining the party’s credibility and working to weaken democratic institutions in the state. He warned that such actions could erode public trust and disrupt the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
In response, Uche Aguoru, Publicity Secretary of the APC in Abia State, dismissed Yellow’s claims as baseless. Aguoru argued that the Ikpegbu Emeka Yellow-led Caretaker Committee lacks the authority or legitimacy to guide or advise Abia’s people. He maintained that the APC enjoys widespread acceptance and love from Abia residents, countering Yellow’s narrative with confidence in their party’s popularity.
Aguoru also accused Yellow and his supporters of attempting to sell the PDP to the Labour Party-led administration in Abia. He alleged that the same group had previously sabotaged the PDP during the 2023 elections, undermining the party’s chances and weakening its position. He urged the public to remain cautious of what he described as internal sabotage within the PDP.
The political tension between the two parties underscores the growing stakes in Abia’s 2027 elections. As both parties position themselves for the upcoming polls, the call for unity and the accusations of betrayal are likely to intensify. The outcome of these internal and inter-party dynamics could significantly influence the state’s political direction in the coming years.
