Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) State House of Assembly primaries in Akwa Ibom State, political stakeholders in the Ikot Ekpene state constituency have firmly rejected any form of consensus candidacy or automatic ticket allocation for the Ikot-Ekpene/Obot Akara State constituency seat. They argue that such moves are undemocratic and could jeopardize the party’s chances in the general elections by promoting candidates without genuine grassroots support. The stakeholders emphasized that direct primaries are the only transparent, fair, and democratic method to reflect the true will of party members and delegates.
In a press conference held on Thursday following a strategic meeting on Wednesday, the group reiterated their commitment to a free and fair electoral process. Former APC Assistant Secretary, Umoh Amadu, speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, condemned attempts by a few individuals to impose a candidate who lacks widespread support. He described such actions as “antithetical and unwelcomed,” warning that they undermine the party’s internal democracy and violate both the APC constitution and the Electoral Act 2026.
Amadu clarified that their stance is not aimed at promoting or attacking any individual but is focused on safeguarding the interests of the Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara local governments. He stressed that the most competent candidate should emerge through a direct primary, ensuring that the chosen representative has the trust and backing of the people. The group also expressed strong support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno, citing their performances in office.
However, they made it clear that they are not prepared to re-elect any representative who has failed to deliver for the constituency. “We plead with our leaders not to sacrifice the entire community because of their personal benefit,” Amadu said. He urged party leaders to allow the most popular candidate to win the primary, so that the party can secure victory in the general election and continue supporting Governor Eno’s administration.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their loyalty to the APC, stating that the party’s unity and progress depend on justice, fairness, and respect for the democratic rights of all members. They emphasized that the press conference was not intended to favor any candidate but to uphold democratic principles for the benefit of the entire Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara constituency. As the primaries approach, the call for a transparent and inclusive process grows louder, with stakeholders insisting that the people’s voice must be heard above all else. This development highlights the growing demand for accountability and fairness within Nigeria’s political landscape.
