PDP Sweeps Adamawa State Polls, Secures Victory in All 21 LGAs and 226 Wards

The Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the outstanding Numan Local Government Area (LGA) election, completing a clean sweep for the party across all 21 LGAs in the state. The announcement was made on Monday evening, following the conduct of the Numan election earlier that day. Zidon Nzanyopwa, the PDP candidate, emerged victorious with 19,174 votes, defeating All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bio Alexander, who received 5,676 votes, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Nancy Nelson, who polled 4,178 votes. The electoral officer overseeing the process, Sani Ahmed, confirmed the results after a smooth and peaceful voting exercise.

The Numan election was initially scheduled for Saturday, June 13, alongside the other 20 LGAs, but was postponed to Monday due to logistical and security concerns. Despite the delay, the election proceeded without major incidents, and results were announced promptly. By Monday afternoon, it had become evident that the PDP had secured victories across all local government areas, setting the stage for the final declaration. The chairman of ADSIEC, Mohammed Umar, officially confirmed the overall results late Monday evening in Yola, the state capital.

Umar announced that the PDP won not only in all 21 LGAs but also in all 226 wards, meaning every local government chairman, vice chairman, and councillor across the state is now a member of the PDP. This marks a significant political shift in Adamawa State, which is currently governed by an APC governor, Ahmadu Fintiri. The PDP candidates were endorsed earlier in the year, before Governor Fintiri’s defection from the PDP to the APC, creating a unique political landscape where the state government is led by APC while all local government leadership positions are held by PDP members.

ADSIEC Chairman Mohammed Umar commended the people of Adamawa for their high voter turnout and for exercising their democratic rights peacefully. He emphasized the importance of the election in strengthening local governance and fostering democratic participation. The peaceful conduct of the polls, despite the political tensions and the governor’s party switch, underscores the resilience of Adamawa’s electoral process.

This outcome reinforces the PDP’s dominance at the grassroots level in Adamawa, even as the state remains under APC leadership at the executive level. The results are expected to influence future political dynamics and party strategies in the state. As the new local government leaders prepare to take office, attention will turn to how they will collaborate with the state government to address developmental challenges.
