Accord Party has firmly rejected a recent court order directing its de-registration and declared its intention to appeal the ruling, insisting it will remain on the ballot for the upcoming Ekiti and Osun governorship elections as well as the 2027 general elections. The party’s leadership maintains that the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court was issued in defiance of a stay of proceedings order granted by the Court of Appeal, undermining due process and the rule of law. In a statement signed by Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, National Chairman of Accord, the party criticized the court’s decision as being delivered in “flagrant disregard” of higher court directives, calling it an affront to justice.
Accord emphasized that the Federal High Court’s judgment was part of proceedings that had already been suspended by the Court of Appeal, making the ruling legally questionable. The party described the judiciary as “the temple of justice governed by the rule of law and due process, not fiat,” underscoring its belief that the judgment was improperly issued. As a result, Accord has already begun legal action to challenge the ruling and will appeal to higher courts to protect its constitutional rights and electoral participation.
The party also clarified that it is not a party to the suit filed by the so-called National Forum of Former Legislators, which sought its deregistration. Accord pointed out that it had successfully won two councillorship elections in Jigawa State, a clear demonstration of its compliance with existing constitutional and electoral frameworks. These victories, the party argues, affirm its legitimacy and right to contest future elections.
Accord assured its members, candidates, and supporters that it remains fully committed to its electoral plans and will not be deterred by what it calls “anti-democratic and reactionary forces.” The party announced it will proceed with its campaign activities, including the scheduled flag-off of the Imole campaign on Tuesday, 16th June 2026, in Osun State. This event is expected to mark a significant milestone in its preparations for the upcoming elections.
The party’s stance reflects its determination to uphold democratic principles and ensure its voice is heard in Nigeria’s political landscape. As legal battles unfold, Accord remains focused on its mission to contest elections and contribute to the nation’s democratic process. The outcome of its appeal will be closely watched by political observers and stakeholders across the country.
