Rufus Omeire, the Action Peoples Party (APP) senatorial candidate for Imo West, Orlu, has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to immediately suspend Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, over what he describes as actions that undermine judicial hierarchy, the rule of law, and Nigeria’s democratic framework. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Omeire expressed deep concern that at a time when Nigerians are battling insecurity, economic hardship, and other national crises, judicial decisions that foster uncertainty and tension must not be tolerated. He emphasized that Justice Lifu’s recent ruling, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister several political parties including the APP, Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), has sparked widespread controversy and raised serious questions about judicial conduct.
Omeire pointed out that the Court of Appeal has consistently held that judges who fail to comply with the orders or decisions of superior courts are unfit to remain on the bench. He argued that this established principle must be applied to Justice Lifu, whose judgment was subsequently suspended by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. “As Nigerians continue to grapple with worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and other pressing national challenges, it is deeply troubling that Justice Lifu allegedly appears determined to create further uncertainty and tension through actions that undermine the rule of law and judicial hierarchy,” Omeire stated. He warned that if left unchecked, such conduct could lead to anarchy and erode public trust in the judiciary.
The APP chieftain stressed that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man and must be protected from actions that weaken confidence in the justice system. “If a Federal High Court judge cannot obey the orders and decisions of superior courts, what moral authority would such a judge have to expect compliance with his own orders?” he asked. Omeire further cautioned that failing to act decisively against judicial misconduct could encourage what he termed “judicial recklessness.” He insisted that suspending Justice Lifu would serve as a deterrent to other judges who might be tempted to disregard established judicial procedures and the supremacy of higher courts.
Omeire also underscored that Nigeria’s democracy, built through years of sacrifice, must not be jeopardized by the actions of any individual, regardless of position. “Our democracy has been built through years of sacrifice and must not be endangered by the conduct of any selfish and greedy individual,” he said. In addition to his legal concerns, Omeire reaffirmed the APP’s commitment to addressing the developmental, security, and economic challenges facing the Orlu Senatorial Zone, Imo State, and Nigeria as a whole. He highlighted the party’s growing popularity in Imo State and its dedication to promoting policies that advance peace, unity, and prosperity.
The controversy surrounding Justice Lifu’s judgment has drawn national attention, with opposition parties and citizens expressing alarm over its implications for political pluralism and electoral integrity. As the legal process continues, Omeire’s call for disciplinary action underscores the broader need for accountability and institutional integrity within Nigeria’s judiciary. The outcome of this matter could set a significant precedent for how judicial misconduct is handled in the country’s democratic framework.
