The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ogun State Command, has arrested 210 suspects for various offences including vandalism, fraud, and illegal mining over the past one and a half years. This significant achievement was disclosed by the State Commandant, Mrs. Remilekun Ekundayo, during a familiarisation visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun Council, in Abeokuta on Wednesday. The operation also led to the recovery of over N23 million in fraud-related cases, returned to victims, and the resolution of more than 1,700 disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms. These efforts highlight the corps’ proactive role in maintaining law and order and protecting public interests across the state.
Mrs. Ekundayo emphasized that the NSCDC has maintained an intelligence-driven approach to security operations, which has helped prevent numerous criminal activities. The command has successfully protected critical infrastructure such as pipelines, railway corridors, and power installations, contributing to the state’s economic stability and safety. She stressed that these accomplishments reflect the corps’ dedication to its statutory responsibilities, which include safeguarding national assets, preventing economic sabotage, and supporting disaster management and emergency response. The commandant also called for stronger collaboration with the media to enhance public awareness and security outcomes in Ogun State.
During the visit, Ekundayo underscored the vital role journalists play in shaping public perception and influencing societal attitudes. She noted that media professionals are not only reporters but also key partners in bridging the gap between government institutions and the people. “In matters of security, your role becomes even more strategic and impactful,” she said, reiterating the importance of accurate and timely information in fostering community trust and cooperation. The NSCDC, she added, remains committed to transparency and public engagement as part of its broader security mandate.
In response, the State Chairman of the NUJ, Wale Olanrewaju, assured the commandant of the union’s continued support. He pledged that the NUJ would uphold its responsibility to report security issues accurately and promptly, ensuring the public remains informed and engaged. Olanrewaju highlighted the mutual benefits of collaboration between the media and security agencies, noting that such partnerships enhance accountability and public confidence. He encouraged ongoing dialogue and joint initiatives to strengthen security narratives and community resilience.
The visit marks a step forward in building a more coordinated approach to security and public communication in Ogun State. As the NSCDC continues its operations, the partnership with the media is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining peace, promoting transparency, and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
