The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially relocated its May 9 national convention to Bauchi State, following difficulties in securing a suitable venue in Abuja. The decision, announced on Wednesday by the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, comes ahead of the screening of aspirants at the SDP’s national headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory. Gombe explained that the move aligns with the party’s constitution, which permits conventions to be held anywhere in Nigeria. He also expressed gratitude to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for offering a venue, despite existing political differences between the two parties.
The convention is a critical step in the SDP’s preparations for the upcoming general elections, as the party aims to strengthen its national footprint and field candidates for key positions, including the presidency, governorships, and legislative seats. To ensure fairness and transparency, the party has established several committees, including the Screening, Electoral, and Convention committees, along with various sub-committees to manage specific tasks. These structures are designed to oversee the entire process from aspirant vetting to candidate selection.
The screening exercise, which began in Abuja, will determine the eligibility of all candidates vying for positions across the party’s hierarchy. Prof. Gombe assured members that the process would strictly follow party guidelines and that only qualified aspirants would be cleared to contest. He emphasized that the screening is not merely a formality but a crucial stage in building a credible and capable leadership team for the party.
Chairman of the Screening Committee, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar Lima (retd.), stressed the importance of integrity and diligence during the vetting process. He warned that any aspirant found to be unqualified or lacking in necessary credentials would be disqualified. Lima’s remarks underscore the party’s commitment to upholding standards and ensuring that only competent individuals are considered for leadership roles.
The move to Bauchi State highlights the SDP’s adaptability and determination to proceed with its electoral preparations despite logistical challenges. It also reflects the party’s willingness to engage with state leaders across political lines for the sake of democratic processes. As the screening continues and the convention date approaches, the SDP remains focused on building a united and competitive platform for the next election cycle.
This development positions the SDP as a serious contender in Nigeria’s political landscape, with a clear strategy to expand its influence and present a strong challenge in the upcoming elections. The party’s efforts to maintain transparency and inclusivity in its internal processes may also influence voter perception and party loyalty in the months ahead.
