Enugu PDP Backs Turakis Return Amid Supreme Court Verdict Ending Party Crisis

Kabiru Turaki’s re-emergence as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been hailed as a turning point for the party by Barr Steve Oruruo, Chairman of the PDP in Enugu State, following a series of internal crises that threatened the party’s unity and credibility. Oruruo, speaking to journalists shortly after returning from Abuja, expressed full confidence in Turaki’s ability to lead the party through its current challenges and reposition it for national relevance. He emphasized that Turaki’s leadership comes at a critical time when Nigeria urgently needs a politically stable and nationally accepted party with proven governance credentials.

Oruruo praised the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, for its decisive and principled handling of the leadership crisis. He described the BoT’s actions as bold and untainted, highlighting their resistance to manipulation, inducement, or threats. “The BOT has proved that it is not only united and untainted but proudly insulated from all manipulations, even at the greatest risk of inducement or threat,” he stated, underscoring the integrity of the party’s leadership structure.

The Enugu PDP chairman also addressed the recent Supreme Court judgment on the party’s internal纷争, offering a clear interpretation of its implications. He noted that while the Court nullified the Ibadan Convention in a split decision, it unanimously upheld the suspension of Senator Samuel Anyanwu and other factional leaders. According to Oruruo, this ruling invalidates all actions taken by the suspended faction, rendering them “null and void and of no effect.” He dismissed the rival leadership structure as illegitimate, calling the inauguration of Anyanwu’s National Committee “ab initio a farce” and the Abuja Kirishi convention “a glamorous joke taken too far.”

With the leadership issue now resolved, Oruruo announced that the PDP is ready to resume its political activities nationwide. He confirmed that the sale of interest and nomination forms for aspirants will commence under the legitimate and genuine leadership structure, from national to subnational levels. This move marks a significant step toward restoring party operations and preparing for upcoming elections.

Oruruo also called for a broader political reset in Nigeria, urging leaders to adopt a people-oriented governance model. He stressed that the Nigerian electorate deserves leadership that reflects their aspirations and yearnings. “We shall recapture and redirect the wheel of statecraft to encapsulate the will of the majority,” he declared, signaling the party’s commitment to democratic renewal.

As the PDP moves forward under Turaki’s leadership, the party’s ability to unite and deliver on its promises will be closely watched by Nigerians across the country.
