2027 Presidential Aspirants: SDP Screens Adebayo and Other Candidates

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially begun screening presidential aspirants, including Prince Adewole Adebayo, as part of its preparations for the 2027 general election. The screening exercise, held on Wednesday in Abuja at the party’s national secretariat, marks a key step toward selecting a credible candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is expected to seek re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). The SDP aims to field a strong, united candidate capable of winning the presidency and reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.

National Chairman Professor Sadiq Gombe confirmed that the party has made extensive preparations for its upcoming national convention. He highlighted the formation of over four key committees, including the Screening Committee, Electoral Committee, and Convention Committee, each tasked with specific responsibilities to ensure a fair and transparent process. Gombe emphasized that the screening will cover all aspirants vying for elective offices, including president, governors in all 36 states, members of the National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly.

The screening process is being conducted at the SDP’s conference hall, located at its registered office with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This location underscores the party’s commitment to adhering to legal and electoral standards. Gombe expressed confidence in the competence and integrity of the committee members, urging them to carry out their duties with diligence, fairness, and transparency. He stressed that the credibility of the entire convention process depends on the integrity of this initial screening stage.

Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar Lima, Chairman of the Screening Committee, reiterated the importance of strict adherence to party rules and procedures. He noted that despite varying levels of familiarity among committee members, everyone must approach the task with professionalism and integrity. Lima’s remarks underscore the party’s determination to avoid internal conflicts and ensure a level playing field for all aspirants.

The SDP’s proactive approach reflects its ambition to reposition itself as a serious contender in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race. By instituting structured committees and transparent processes, the party aims to rebuild public trust and attract a broad base of support. The screening of aspirants like Prince Adewole Adebayo is a crucial step in identifying candidates with the vision, experience, and credibility to lead the nation.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the SDP’s efforts to streamline its internal processes may influence voter perception and political dynamics across the country. The outcome of this screening could set the tone for a more competitive and inclusive political environment in Nigeria.
