Deborah Adeniran, a Nigerian Chevening alumna, has been honoured with two prestigious international awards for her groundbreaking work in cancer education and research, cementing her status as a leading voice in global public health. The accolades were presented on April 21 and 23, 2026, in recognition of her sustained efforts to raise cancer awareness and support underserved communities. She received the World Changing Alumni Award 2025 from the University of Glasgow, where she completed her master’s degree in Cancer Research and Precision Oncology. The second award, the U21 Leader of the Future Award 2026, was conferred by Universitas 21, a global network of research-intensive universities, highlighting her as one of the world’s most promising emerging leaders.
Adeniran, who studied at the University of Glasgow during the 2023–2024 Chevening scholarship cohort, has dedicated her career to improving cancer outcomes in Nigeria and across Africa. As the Programmes and Partnerships Manager at the International Cancer Research Abuja and founder of CancerAid_Africa, she has worked tirelessly to bridge gaps in cancer care, education, and advocacy. Her initiatives have empowered countless individuals, particularly women, who often face systemic neglect in healthcare systems. Speaking to Diaspora Tales, she emphasized that the awards reflect not just her personal achievements but also the collective struggle of those fighting for health equity.
“These awards are not just mine. They belong to every Nigerian woman who has been told her health does not matter, and to every advocate who refuses to stop fighting,” Adeniran said. Her words underscore a deep commitment to social justice and inclusive healthcare. Through CancerAid_Africa, she has launched campaigns that educate communities about early detection, reduce stigma, and provide support to patients and caregivers. Her work has reached remote areas where access to medical information and services is limited, making a tangible difference in lives.
The recognition from the University of Glasgow and Universitas 21 speaks to the global impact of her efforts. The World Changing Alumni Award celebrates graduates who have made transformative contributions to society, while the U21 Leader of the Future Award identifies young professionals poised to shape the future through innovation and leadership. Adeniran’s journey from a Chevening scholar to an internationally recognised advocate exemplifies the power of education and purpose-driven action.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with rising cancer cases and limited healthcare infrastructure, Adeniran’s work offers a beacon of hope. Her success highlights the importance of investing in African talent and research, and signals a growing influence of Nigerian professionals on the global health stage. With these awards, she not only gains international recognition but also strengthens the foundation for future advocacy and innovation in cancer care across the continent.
