The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has officially affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha as its governorship candidate following the voluntary withdrawal of previously elected candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalhatu. The decision was made during an expanded state executive committee meeting held in Kano, where party leaders emphasized adherence to constitutional procedures and electoral guidelines. Dr. Bello Gambo Bichi, Chairman of the Kano State PDP, confirmed that a replacement primary election was conducted on September 16, after Dalhatu’s resignation, in line with party regulations.
Bichi explained that the primary election was necessary under party law when a candidate withdraws from a contest. He stated, “Last time we did a primary election in which Mohammed Bello Dalha was declared winner, but following consultations among stakeholders in Kano and Abuja, the candidate decided to withdraw.” The replacement primary was then held, and Abacha emerged victorious, formally declared by panel chairman Dr. Abba Abdullahi. The process was conducted transparently and in compliance with PDP rules and INEC standards, ensuring fairness and legitimacy.
In addition to affirming Abacha, the PDP also resolved longstanding internal factional disputes within the party. A major step toward unity came with the concession of the deputy governorship slot to the Turaki group, a move hailed as pivotal in ending divisions. Former factional PDP chairman and ex-Commissioner for Land and Agriculture, Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya, was named as the new deputy governorship candidate. Bichi said, “After a wide consultation and reconciliation, we agreed to give the deputy governorship slot to the Turaki faction here in Kano. With this, there is no faction in Kano PDP.”
He added that representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present to witness the entire process, reinforcing its credibility. The reconciliation also extended to other positions, with some National Assembly and state assembly candidates being replaced to promote harmony. Bichi insisted that the party is now united and “waxing stronger” ahead of the upcoming elections.
This development marks a significant turning point for the Kano PDP, which has long struggled with internal conflicts. Party leaders believe the unity will strengthen their campaign and broaden support across the state. Bichi concluded with confidence, stating that with the reconciliation and affirmation of Muhammad Sani Abacha as governorship candidate, the party is poised to win the next general election. The move signals renewed hope for a cohesive political front in Kano’s 2023 gubernatorial race.
