A devastating fire incident in Oyo State has led to the destruction of goods worth millions of naira, affecting multiple markets and properties across the state. The first major blaze occurred at Akunlemu Market in Oyo town on Tuesday night, where several shops were engulfed in flames. Authorities confirmed that household items and commercial goods were severely damaged, though no casualties were recorded. The Oyo State Fire Service responded promptly to contain the fire before it spread further.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident and provided details on the emergency response. He stated that upon arrival, the affected shops were already fully ablaze. Firefighters immediately took action and successfully brought the inferno under control, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. This swift intervention helped limit the damage to the immediate area.
In a separate but equally alarming incident, another fire broke out in Ibadan, the state capital, early Wednesday morning. The fire struck a four-room building located at Abigael Makinde Close in the Abayomi area, which was being used as a hotel and lounge. Thick smoke billowed from the structure when firefighters arrived, indicating the intensity of the blaze. Again, no injuries were reported, thanks to the timely response by emergency teams.
Akinwande also disclosed a third incident involving a tanker accident in the Moniya area of Ibadan. A FONTO trailer tanker, with registration number FKJ 843 XL from Lagos, carrying 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), swerved off the road and crashed into a ditch near a primary health centre along New Moniya Road. While no casualties were reported from this incident either, the potential danger posed by the spilled fuel was significant. The fire service team worked to secure the area and prevent any secondary explosions or fires.
These three incidents within a short span highlight the need for improved safety measures and public awareness in high-risk areas such as markets, hotels, and transportation corridors. The combined damage from these events underscores the vulnerability of urban infrastructure in Oyo State.
